Krylov State Research Centre at ITTC Ocean Engineering Committee

2 october 2015

Next year Krylov State Research Centre will host the next regular meeting of ITTC (the International Towing Tank Conference) Ocean Engineering Committee members. Apart from KSRC experts, the representatives of France, Norway, UK, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, China and Japan also serve on the committee. At the recent meeting in Tokyo it was decided to hold the next committee session in Saint Petersburg on June 6 — 10, 2016.

During such sessions the international experts define the procedures for various types of tests and experiments to be performed in test tanks of different countries setting the standards to be followed by all R&D organizations operating test facilities. Simultaneously approved procedures serve as a main guidemark for the Customers ordering different investigations.

In particular, during working meetings in Tokyo the Krylov State Research Centre represented by the Head of Hydro- and aero-dynamics Division Viacheslav Magarovskii came up with the proposal to simulate the wind loads on marine and offshore facilities in wind tunnels (including landscape tunnels) instead of doing it directly in the tank bowl. According to KSRC researches, it can significantly improve the accuracy of tests giving the designers more realistic view of the wind loads acting on the objects. This very approach deserves to be evidenced in relevant ITTC procedures.

The following issues to be discussed in details by Ocean Engineering Committee members in 2016 in Saint Petersburg are worth mentioning:

  • development of the procedure for wind load simulation during the tests of offshore facilities;
  • elaboration of rules for tests of several narrowly spaced objects,
  • analysis of existing data on wave resonance in the bay and gulf water areas.

ITTC is a voluntary association dealing with unification and standardization of methods for prediction of hydrodynamic performance of vessels and marine structures. Over 100 centers from 30 countries form this association. Krylov State Research Centre has been the ITTC member for 60 years.
