the first session of the State Commission on Arctic

Director General of Krylov State Research Center, Mr. Vladimir Nikitin, participated in the first session of the State Commission on Arctic developments that took place in Moscow on April 14 and was presided by the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Rogozin.

Dmitry Rogozin said that the total amount of funds to be allocated for Arctic development program in the coming five years should amount 222 billion rubles. According to Mr. Rogozin, the main objective of today is to assess the scale of activities in Arctic, to establish the working bodies of the State Commission and to adopt necessary regulations.

The session highlighted that the efforts in Arctic developments, such as improvement of Northern Sea Route infrastructure, as well as design and construction of ships and various marine platforms for the Arctic operation cannot be resolved efficiently without active implementation of innovative R&Ds, and this is exactly where KSRC can offer its advanced knowledge and technology assets.

The body in charge of Arctic developments will be Scientific & Expert Council led by Mr. Artur Chilingarov, outstanding Russian polar explorer and Special Representative of the President of Russian Federation for international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Mr. Rogozin underlined that assurance of security in the Russian Arctic would be the subject of separate discussion with the Ministry of Defense. Most probably this discussion will take place during the International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS) to be held in St. Petersburg on July 1–5.
